Our Wednesday (March 12th) afternoon zodiac cruise was a huge success – as far as whale spotting is concerned. We saw 8 humpback whales over the course of the 2 hours we were on the water.

We also saw two calves playing close to the ice. They can be seen in the slideshow above, with thin white tails. They were very active and their mothers stood guard, circling in front of the calves as they frolicked. The second and third photos in the series are the Mom Humpbacks.

The weather on Wednesday was absolutely perfect for the morning landing. Same for the afternoon zodiac. The weather is still cold. However, we dress in MANY layers so that any activity leads to a quick warm up. Here is the list :

Top – compression camisole, long sleeve dri-fit tee, cotton turtleneck, fleece jacket, Parka. We wear gators around our necks – I pull mine up over my head to keep my hair tucked in. James prefers a wool cap.

Bottom: compression bike shorts, fleece lined leggings, a pair of jogger sweat pants with waterproof pants. On our feet we have a pair of wool socks covered with insulated boot socks and waterproof ‘wellies’.

In addition to all the gear, we have to wear a 5 lb. life vest over the parka at all times. They are the thin blue belt/ collar combos you see everyone in my pics wearing. They have to be kept on all the time because the weather changes very quickly here in Antarctica. One can be recalled to board a zodiac at a minutes notice. That couldn’t be quickly or easily done if you’re searching for your gear.

We are having a great time. We are learning so much. The internet is really spotty so please be patient for updates. Very cool stuff coming!
