Puerto Eden, population 90, is the only settlement along the entire Chilean Inside Passage. It lies in Chile’s Region XI, Aysen del General Carlos Ibanez del Campos. This is Chile’s least populated region. Wooden walkways connect the dock area to the rest of town.

There was thick fog upon arrival. The village gradually revealed itself as the mist lifted. The skies stayed grey until we sailed from the area.

If I am to be completely honest, our visit there felt a bit like trespassing. The walkways ran not 10 feet from most front doors. The families here are crabbers. Crabbing season begins in April and runs through October. During the off season, the village hosts tourists. We were encouraged to buy locally produced goods. The most popular items were hand knitted sheep’s wool socks and hats. Of course, we did our part – and we’re bringing home a warm souvenir.

The local 7-11. Instead of lousy hot dogs – delicious empanadas.
Shrine to St. Peter, patron saint of fishermen

The excursion to Puerto Eden was early and quick. Because of strong currents, ships must travel the English Narrows at slack tide. Once through the Narrows, our ship headed to Iceberg fjord.

No words needed for the glacier visit… Just awesome – in the truest sense of the word.
